A 59-year-old cyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a car Friday afternoon.
The incident took place near Kingsway and Tower Road at around 1 pm.
Police say a woman driving her Toyota Corolla turned onto Tower Road when she struck the man as he came off a sidewalk.
Chris Chan, the Executive Director of the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society, says Kingsway is an especially dangerous stretch of road for cyclists.
“Anyone who’s biking on the sidewalk, it’s technically illegal,” says Chan. “But it’s quite understandable why someone would choose to bike on the sidewalk on Kingsway, as opposed to riding in the traffic lane. And you don’t really have a good alternative off of Kingsway because of the layout of the roads in that area. If you’re trying to get to the Canadian Tire or the Superstore, you have to be there.”
Chan adds that this shows that more bike paths are needed in our city.
“It speaks to a number of things,” says Chan. “For one, the need for better bike infrastructure so that people don’t have to bike on busy roads. Or they don’t have to opt for using sidewalks, which aren’t always the safest places to be either. But rather have reasonable option to take that can be safe for bikes.”
Paramedics treated the man at the scene, then took him to hospital.
There are no reports of charges, as the investigation is ongoing. (km)
