Alberta Education Minister David Eggen says there will be consequences for schools fighting students’ rights to Gay-Straight Alliances.
But, he says, the Province must follow the letter of the law to enact them.
Independent Baptist Christian Education Society Chair, Pastor Brian Coldwell, had until Friday afternoon to comply, but instead the Authority sent a letter from its lawyer.
Coldwell has pledged to fight GSAs in his two schools on religious grounds.
Today, Eggen announced that an inquiry is being launched. It the first step, he says, to either de-funding the schools, or dissolving the Society’s teaching license.
Eggen doesn’t want any mis-steps.
“I think some of the parameters are fairly straightforward,” he says, “but considering how infrequently this does take place, we want to make sure we are following the due process provided under law.”
The authority runs two private Christian schools in the province, with about 70% of their funding coming from Provincial coffers. (ms, The Canadian Press, News Talk 770)
