My sterilized medical hat is off today to Colin Kennedy, a cancer patient in Winnipeg who is trying to do what the politicians should have done long ago, come up with some medication to take away the pain of parking at hospitals.
Colin has a petition out for free parking.
It’s not as though this has never been mentioned before, although it’s something I expect to come up around election time, only to be wheeled to the morgue after the votes are counted.
Colin’s mom spent hundreds of dollars helping him through his hospital treatments. He says it felt like extortion. Others say it’s like your loved one is being held for ransom.
Like many of you, I’ve been shocked at how much it costs every half hour.
Not knowing how much time a visit to emergency would cost, I ended up going back to feed the meter three times, and was grateful to the driver leaving who offered her unexpired ticket to me.
I’ve passed a couple on myself, and then the parking machines started collecting license numbers.
I think when hospitals are built or renovated, the cost should include the price of a free parkade.
In the meantime, you might want to see Colin’s petition.
Let me know what you think about hospital parking.
