A pedestrian has died, and police are investigating after a collision with an Edmonton Transit bus near West Edmonton Mall. Just before 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, police had closed 87 Avenue between 167 and 170 Streets. A bus at the scene, which had a cracked windshield, was cordoned off by police tape. Jennifer Larraway, with Edmonton Transit says they’re not sure what happened yet.
“That is the type of detail that we’re trying to piece together right now. Our crews are out there trying to gather as much information as possible in order to determine exactly what happened”
Laraway says the driver is coping as best as possible.
“The driver is understandibly very upset. Nobody wants to be involved in a situation like this. Peer support has been offered and we’ll follow up with the appropriate resources to provide that operator with the support they need.”
This is the first fatality involving Edmonton Transit since, a city of Edmonton employee was killed outside of the Century Place office tower downtown in 2011.
