The province has shut down a northern Alberta private school, over financial concerns.
The registration and accreditation for Trinity Christian School Association in Cold Lake has been cancelled effective immediately. Education Minister David Eggen says the province raised concerns numerous times about how the school handled its funding.
“After failing to sufficiently respond to these concerns I ordered the department to conduct an onsite financial review of the Trinity Christian School Association the information provided through this review was alarming”
Eggen says auditors found all kinds of problems.
“There was improper, I think inappropriate leases, they were leasing their properties to themselves at ten times the market rate. They were spending money on such things as parties and alcohol gift certificates.”
The audit found public funding for Trinity was being directed to a third party called Wisdom Home Schooling Society. Eggen says they’re submitting their findings to the RCMP and the Canada Revenue Agency.
