The CFL regular season came to an end for the Eskimos on the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday afternoon with a 41-17 win over the Toronto Argonauts. The win was the fifth in the final six games for the Eskimos who finish with a 10 and 8 record as they head to the playoffs.
Head coach Jason Maas says he couldn’t be more proud of the coaches and players that stepped up this week.
“We talked about it all week. We wanted to be better today than we were on Day 1, at the start of the week, and I think we accomplished that goal. And I said it all along, we wanted to win the ball game. But we had a strategy in place to do that and I think we executed it this week.”
James Franklin started at quarterback and made short work of the Argos defence. The Eskimos backup QB engineered four straight touchdown drives to start the game and gave the Eskimos a 28-7 lead, and that was more than enough to get the win. Franklin threw four TD passes and for 335 yards before he gave way to Jordan Lynch in the fourth quarter. Mike Reilly dressed, but did not play.
Brandon Zylstra had his best game as a pro, 11 receptions for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Franklin also threw TDs to Shakir Bell and Devon Bailey. Lynch ran one in for the Eskimos in the fourth quarter.
Reilly was among several veterans who did not play or played very little as the Eskimos chose to rest them for next week’s playoff game.
“Now everybody’s record is pretty much wiped clean and you’ve got to start from scratch,” remarked Reilly. “You get one chance and if you don’t play well then you go home. So I don’t really put a lot of stock into any team that we face in the playoffs how it went in the regular season against them because again the playoffs are a whole different beast.”
The Eskimos finish fourth in the CFL west and will cross over to the east for the playoffs, starting Sunday November 13th in Hamilton for the eastern semi final.
