The province is looking at new legilsation which will allow those who identify as neither male, nor female, to put an “X” on certain government documents.
The bill was introduced in the legislature by Service Alberta Minister Stephanie McLean, and proposes 80 changes to birth, death and marriage certificates, as well as other related documents.
In addition, the legislation would clarify how parents can choose any last name for a child, and would be allowed to make changes reflecting cultural practices, such as putting the family name before the given name.
The bill also aims to enhance privacy restrictions on who can access vital records. (scb)
