They always hoped to make it at least 20 years, and June Elgert said there may have been more years ahead for them if the books looked better. As it is, they don’t, and the owner of Danny Hacksaw’s Pub N’ Grub on Lakewood Road in Millwoods says they’re shutting down.
The hard times began with the oil crash, but they weathered it. June told iNews 880 that they cut back some hours, raised some prices and tried offering specials and even brought in a “paint night,” to try and bring more people through the doors.
Into their 20th year, June and her husband Don sat down for a gut check conversation. They had to decide what to do next.
“He said, ‘well, we’ve had two labour increases we’re going to be getting hit with another one, carbon tax is coming in, I’m already seeing my food cost go up, they’ve already told me it’s going up again. Electricity is going up, fixed costs are just going through the roof,’ and he said, ‘you know, will we be able to sustain it, will we be able to make it through?’ and we weren’t sure. So we thought, it’s better to get out now and get something than take a chance and next year maybe have to close, walk away with debt, walk away with nothing, and we just didn’t want to take that gamble.”
June said they’re a small neighborhood pub, usually attended by regulars who are like family and don’t see the high turnover like the busy hot spots on Whyte ave.

Rather than put their future on the roulette wheel of an uncertain business with escalating costs in hard economic times they decided to call it quits. They tried to sell Danny Hacksaw’s whole, but a pair offers fell through, and now the space will become a retail clothing store.
Their last night with open doors, a lively atmosphere and hand cut steaks was Saturday.
