For the first time in over 40 years the Grey Cup belongs to an Ottawa football team!
The drama started before the game did when it was thought Henry Burris wouldn’t be able to start because he tweaked his knee in warm-ups.
The controversy ended when he appeared on the sidelines ready to go just as the anthem started. The RedBlacks opened scoring in the game with number 1 Henry Burris getting the first touchdown of the game, with the extra point it was 7-0 Ottawa.
On the next Calgary drive it was a quick pass by Bo Levi Mitchell to Jerome Messam and it was 7-7 with just over 5 left in the first. And before the quarter was over Marquay McDaniel was out for the game with a shoulder injury. The first ended with the RedBlacks up 11-7.
In the second it was all Henry Burris and the RedBlacks with Ottawa getting another touchdown and the extra point to make it 17-7 for the underdogs. Burris had thrown for over 200 yards by the time the first half was over.
The Stamps suffered 3 turnovers in the second quarter and at the end of it, it was 20-7 for Ottawa. And the third quarter started off in Ottawa’s favor with the RedBlacks getting yet another touchdown to make it 27-7 for the RedBlacks. The Stamps put a few more points on the board making it 27-10. And a huge play by the Stampeders in the form of a touchdown by Lemar Durant made it 27-17 still in the third and that’s how the quarter ended with the Stamps in range for another touchdown.
And to start the 4th the Stamps capitalized on their field position and put in Andrew Buckley he runs the ball in for a touchdown, 27-23 for Ottawa. And with 6 minutes left Henry Burris gets his seconds touchdown of the night from the 1 yard line and it was 33-23 Red Blacks. It was an inside hand off to DaVaris Daniels and he ran it in for a touchdown with the extra point it was 33-30 RedBlacks.
And on the return the Stamps managed to get the ball back with 1:36 to go and they had a chance but Buckley couldn’t get it in.
Rene Paredes comes in and ties the game 33-33 with 10 seconds left and we are going to overtime! Ottawa had the first possession in OT and get the first touchdown no convert though and it’s 39-33 Red Blacks.
Congratulations to Henry Burris and the Ottawa RedBlacks and thank-you to the Calgary Stampeders for an amazing season.
