Mikkel Boedker netted a hat trick as the San Jose Sharks downed the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 Tuesday night at Rogers Place.
Boedker opened the scoring just 1:39 into the game as the Sharks controlled most of the first period. Drake Caggiula netted his third of the season to pull the Oilers even, but Brent Burns made it 2-1 San Jose on a long wrist shot with 18 seconds left in the first.
Sharks goalie Martin Jones made several good saves in the second period, and Boedker scored twice more to make it 4-1 after two.
The Oilers came to life early in the third, with Matthew Benning and Oscar Klefbom scoring 3:23 apart. However, Logan Couture scored on a breakaway shortly after Klefbom’s goal. Couture’s initial shot was stopped by Cam Talbot, but the rebound went in off Couture’s skate as he fell to the ice. The goal stood after video review.
Jones finished with 33 saves. The Oilers, who were starting off a six-game home stand, fall to 21-15-7 on the season. They’ll host New Jersey on Thursday. (jrw, ms)
