Before the carbon tax came into effect, I asked the NDP to stop calling it a levy, a carbon levy.
It sounded to me like government-speak, a way to soften the blow.
But, calling it a levy was not fooling anyone, we knew it was a tax.
I did not expect they would listen to me, so I was not disappointed when they continued calling it a levy.
Now, we see what they were really up to.
As we started paying more for gasoline and natural gas, people started asking questions.
How can the government charge GST on the so-called carbon levy? Isn’t a tax on a tax, illegal?
Well, yes it is, but now we see how they set us up.
They cannot charge a tax on a tax, but they can charge a tax on a user fee, and here is the catch: They’re saying a levy is just a user fee, not a tax.
So, that’s why they insisted on calling it a levy.
I must have been asleep when they explained that before the levy came in.
So, how do you like paying your carbon “user fee”, now?
I still say it’s a tax.
Let me know what you say.
