Peace Regional RCMP had a rough go of it, trying to arrest a man who was already wanted on an arrest warrant out of Stony Plain.
It began with an officer in the Peace River area trying to pull over a suspicious vehicle early Tuesday night that eventually hit the ditch.
The suspect then fled on foot, tricking a nearby homeowner into giving him a ride.
But officers saw the suspect inside the second vehicle, and managed to pull it over, placing the suspect in back of a police car where he somehow managed to escape.
An officer then ended up chasing the suspect into a nearby home, where a struggle took place, and the suspect then fled outside and up a tree.
Staff Sergeant Brent Meyer said the suspect was eventually convinced to climb down and surrender, with investigators now trying to figure out how he escaped from the police car.
“That matter will be the subject of some review and I can’t comment to that at this time,” said Meyer.
He said they’re just glad no one was seriously hurt.
“It’s representative of the dangers of police work. And some fantastic police work by the members of this detachment brought this to a close safely.”
John William Roberts has been charged with escaping lawful custody, two counts of break and enter, and both assaulting and attempting to disarm a police officer, along with numerous other charges.
Roberts has a court date in Peace River on Mar. 6, and another in Stony Plain on Mar. 8. (td)
