An Australian man is facing charges after allegedly coming to Edmonton to have sex with an under aged girl.
Police said a man met a 13-year-old girl over social media in October 2016, and they exchanged sexual messages and pictures.
The victim’s mother found the conversations and notified police at the same time the suspect got to Canada.
Dave Dubnyk with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit said this is a great example of watching what your kids do online.
“I’d like to reiterate to parents the importance of being engaged with their children and their online activities,” Dubnyk said. “Take time to learn what your children are doing online, who they’re engaged with on social media and who they’re chatting with while online.”
Dubnyk also said he applauds the mother’s quick thinking.
“In conversations with their daughter, the mother just felt like something wasn’t quite right what the daughter was planning for the weekend,” Dubnyk said. “Her intuitions told her to explore it a little bit further and in doing so she went into the daughter’s cell phone and discovered these text messages.”
A man was arrested in a hotel room on Feb. 10, 2017.
Police in Australia have also seized devices from the accused home.
