My heart goes out to RCMP Constable David Wynn’s widow, Shelley.
Yesterday, she was standing in the House of Commons, pleading for Bill S-217 to go through.
This is the one called Wynn’s Law, because it is designed to close the legal loophole that contributed to her husband’s death.
His killer had a criminal record as long as your arm and dozens of outstanding charges.
The judge was not made aware of this in letting Shawn Rehn out on bail, because there was no requirement for him to know.
The Criminal Code gives the court a choice on whether they get to know what’s being put back on the street.
Wynn’s Law would make in mandatory that the judge be told.
It’s been more than 2 years since the RCMP officer was killed.
Why does his widow have to plead with lawmakers to do the right thing?
Why have the Liberals opposed the change?
Liberals say they were concerned this new law could result in court delays, and they fear maybe the justice system is not set up to provide all this information.
Today, they vote. Let’s hope they get it right.
Let me know what you think.
