After almost two decades in office, a city councillor is calling it quits.
Ward 9 councillor Bryan Anderson says he won’t be running to regain his seat in the election this fall.
He was first elected to what was then ward 5 in 1998, and was re-elected four times, with his area changed to ward 9 in 2010. He is the longest-serving member of city council.
His news release cites several accomplishments including being on the winning side of a 7-6 vote to keep EPCOR as a wholly city-owned utility, several construction projects that went ahead both for sports and civic use, and his pet project of getting artificial turf installed on sports fields.
Before politics, Anderson was a high school football and basketball coach for 34 years, earning him a spot in the Alberta Schools’ Athletics Association hall of fame.
The next election in Edmonton is Oct. 21.
