With Edmonton Oilers tickets at a very pricey premium, some fans are looking south to catch some playoff action.
Local travel agency Newwest Travel is offering trips down to San Jose that include lower-bowl seats at playoff games against the Oilers.
Newwest President is Dennis Laliberte said with the Oilers opponent only decided on Sunday night, it was a challenge to put the packages together so fast.
“Especially this weekend. It’s Easter weekend so we’re going to be leaving Saturday and Sunday over the weekend to go down to San Jose,” he said. “So it’s really the time-frame of being able to secure flights at a reasonable cost, hotels at a reasonable cost.”
Laliberte said he’s seen the cost of the tickets alone in Edmonton top $1200, and that Sharks tickets are a great deal.
“In San Jose, we were paying about $200 USD per ticket, so that’s probably $240-$250 Canadian,” said Laliberte. “Up here in the nosebleeds, I’ve seen tickets as high on the secondary sites for $500 or $600. So definitely San Jose is a bit of a bargain.”
Laliberte says Newwest agents are already working on itineraries for the second round and beyond.
“We look at the different scenarios. We’ll look at hotels, the bus companies, the airlines. A lot of times we’re able to hold space until we know for sure, but it is a bit of work.”
Packages are already on sale at the Newwest Travel site, with about 34 available.
The Edmonton Oilers host the San Jose Sharks for the first game of the series at Rogers Place Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Faceoff show starts at 6 p.m. You can catch all the action live on 630 CHED. (ms)
