The Edmonton Oilers have moved on to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
They booked their ticket Saturday night, with a hard fought 3-1 road win over the San Jose Sharks. Edmonton wins the series 4-2.
The Oilers played well in the first period, outshooting the Sharks 9-6. However, they couldn’t connect on several good scoring chances.
Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring 50 seconds into the second frame. He took a pass from Adam Larsson and sped in a breakaway, beating Martin Jones five hole. Just 56 seconds later, Anton Slepyshev took advantage of a San Jose giveaway and went in all alone. He beat Jones blocker side to make it 2-0. It was the first career playoff goal for both Draisaitl and Slepyshev.
The Sharks got on the board with 7:48 left when Patrick Marleau beat Cam Talbot from in tight. The Oilers took a too many men penalty with 4:57 left but were able to kill it off. Joe Pavelski hit the crossbar while the Sharks were on the man advantage.
The Oilers held off the Sharks in the final minute with Connor McDavid adding an empty net goal in the final second.
Talbot made 27 saves for the win. Defenceman Oscar Klefbom didn’t play the third period, but he was on the bench.
The Oilers will play Anaheim in the second round. (jrw)
