The verdict in the so-called “pig trial” in Ontario is now raising a number of issues.
Anita Krajnc was charged with criminal mischief for giving water to what she believed to be dehydrated pigs in a transport truck.
She saw it as an act of mercy; the farming community saw it as tampering with their product.
The judge dismissed the case, and Anita concludes that it shows compassion is not a crime.
Now the argument takes off in a couple of directions.
Farmers are wondering what else activists can do to their animals.
Those who preach animal rights wonder how it is a trucker does not get charged for not providing food or water to animals on a trip.
Anita wants to go even further, in having them recognized as persons, thereby raising awareness of what she calls their unjust slaughter.
You can see where this is going.
You’d have no bacon on your burger.
Come to think of it, you’d have to have a veggie patty on your bun.
Let me know what you think about all of this.
