Edmonton Startup Weekend - No Talk, All Action
Posted 6/15/2010 6:46:00 AM
If you've never heard of Startup Edmonton, I'll try to sum them up as best I can. Run by entrepreneur's, it's a nonprofit which helps promote Edmonton's tech community by connecting idea people with investors. The Startup Edmonton team is passionate, smart, and supportive of our city's startup tech community. They held the wildly successful and fun Launch Party in March, and were looking to get involved with something bigger.

Startup Weekend is bigger. It's held in over 100 cities around the world, with over 15,000 entrepreneurs involved. The hardworking team behind Startup Edmonton is bringing it here to us, so that we can partake in something amazing. I caught up with Cindy Fulton at the Girl Geek Dinner last week, and she got me so excited about Startup Weekend, that I asked her some questions so that she could share the excitement with all of you as well.

Thanks for doing this Cindy. So, to start, what is Startup Weekend and when is it?
Startup Weekend Edmonton is ready to fly June 25-27th in the Art Gallery in Enterprise Square. Startup Weekend brings together developers, designers, marketers, inventors, and anyone else interested in ideas and startups to see what they can build in 54 hours. It's an awesome opportunity to meet and work with people on new ideas and technologies and to turn a thought into reality.

Where else have Startup Weekends been held?
Startup Weekends have been run all over the world (over 100 cities in over 25 countries) (from San Francisco to Sydney to Paris) and have been an amazing way to connect people in their own communities, as well as to other Startup Weekend alumni around the world. Hosted by Startup Edmonton, Startup Weekend is going to be an amazing time bringing the startup community together to see what can be built in a weekend.

Who comes to Startup Weekend?

About anyone who considers themselves an entrepreneur or wants to be one. The primary demographic is working professionals age 25-45.

- About 50% have a technical background - Developers / Designers / CTOs / Computer Science types

- About 50% have a non-technical background – Business / Marketing / Lawyers / Investors / VCs/ Social Media

How much is it, and when do I have to sign up by?
Tickets are $99 and include food and beverages for the weekend and a Startup Weekend t-shirt. There's no deadline but we do have a limited amount of spots so the sooner the better.

What can we hope to get out of the weekend?
Learn how to launch a company, meet other people interested in entrepreneurship and fun!

What does it mean for Edmonton to be able to hold a Startup Weekend here?
It's a great for our community. Startup Weekend will help us bring in mentors, make connections and host a world class event right here in our city.

Cindy also mentioned to me that over 36% of Startup Weekend Startups are still alive after 3 months. So you're creating an idea, that may launch as a company. One such success story is Memolane out of Copenhagen.

Tickets will go fast for this event, so make sure and get your tickets or you'll miss out on a great thing.

Good luck to all involved! I can't wait to see what comes out of this weekend. Thanks to the team at Startup Edmonton for bringing an opportunity like this to our city.
