Condo Fire!

Posted 3/9/2010 10:00:00 AM
Enough cannot be said about the fine folks who choose to enter burning buildings to drag our butts to safety. The multi-million dollar condo blaze in downtown Edmonton on Monday is yet another example of why we should pay these guys better than the Mayor & Council.

My Web Editing co-worker Brittney Le Blanc snapped some GREAT shots from the scene ... complete with animal rescues & a big patch of blue sky where the walls & roof of a damaged suite should be. Turns out, much of the thanks for the lack of any deaths or injuries should go to Edmontonian Bela Ba. The brave man lives nearby and says he spotted the first signs of smoke & alerted tenants to the danger. Kudos to Bela & the Edmonton Fire Rescue crews.

Who are YOU?

Posted 3/3/2010 9:26:00 AM
Knowing exactly who, and what, you are is a very good thing. You may spend all day talking and/or tweeting about who you think you are, or who you may want others to think you are, but you'd better be careful not to believe that version yourself.

You can only SAY so much ... people will also judge you by your actions (or lack thereof!).

"This above all: to thine own self be true, ..." (says Polonius in Shakespeare's Hamlet) "... and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man."

Knowing who you are is a precious gift, that only you can choose to give to yourself. It will stop you from putting your foot in your mouth, biting off more than you can chew, and over-all prevent you from looking like an ass (even if you're not fully aware of ...

''Think B4 U post!''

Posted 2/8/2010 4:20:00 PM
More than 60 countries across the world are taking part in the 7th edition of ''Safer Internet Day'' on February 9th, 2010.

The theme this year is: ''Think before you post!'' (or ''Think B4 U post!'').

According to the website: SaferInternet.org ...

"New technologies have turned all of us, and mostly young people, into publishers of information, pictures, and videos. In addition, we can also manage our online identity in a way which may turn us into "celebrities". While bringing about new opportunities for personal expression and creativity, new technologies may also lead to embarrassing or even traumatic situations. For example, photos, once posted online, remain online and can be seen by anybody, even years after they have been posted. Posting today photos from a fun party may have consequences on the way a potential employer considers a job application years later. Therefore, children and teenagers need to be empowered ...

Links in the News

What a great way to kick off 2010; with a brand new addition to iNews880.com.

Have you seen the ''Links in the News'' section, yet? Check it out. It's easy to lose an hour (or two) following the hyperlinks connected to the various local news du jour.

I have to admit, I was worried when we started this iNews880 endeavor, with a massive mandate that the website (THIS website) would drive the on-air news & information product. I wondered exactly HOW we would pull this off ...

We've been doing a great job in the last two years, learning as we go, BUT this ''Links in the News'' section feels like a warp jump forward towards fulfilling our ultimate goal.

Whenever news breaks, I no longer have to wait for the rest of the news team to pump out some stories. I can just go-ahead and start posting ...

I'm feelin' Snuggie (TM)

Posted 1/4/2010 9:00:00 AM
Yup, it's official ... I now own (& wear) a Snuggie.

If you're not familiar with the "As-Seen-On-TV" blanket with sleeves, just follow the link above. I felt a guilty pleasure at unwrapping the Christmas gift from my wife; knowing full well that once I went Snuggie ... I'd likely never go back!

After spending about 20-plus hours in my Snuggie (since Christmas), the shame of wearing such a nerdy garment is starting to wear off. I STILL make sure the curtains are closed when I put it on, but I'm ready to come out of the closet & admit that I'm now a regular user.

Try one out ... if you dare ...

Karzai's broken olive branch

Posted 11/27/2009 4:20:00 AM
"All those who stand armed against their (home) country, ... should (instead) help rebuild Afghanistan."

That's the olive branch Afghan President Hamid Karzai is extending to EVERYBODY, from his main rival in the recent (-ly almost lost) presidential election, right down to the "official enemy".

In his message Friday, marking the Muslim holiday of Eid, Karzi is renewing his call to the Taliban to lay down its weapons and participate in rebuilding Afghanistan.

My first thought at reading this news, was a short-lived fantasy ... just imagine, if Karzai headed home after delivering that message and his phone started ringing ...

Ringing ... RINGING ... Ringing ...

"Hello, Karzai residence. Hamid speaking."

"Hey Hammy, it's Abdullah Abdullah. You'll never guess who's at my house right now, with a box of Tim Hortons under his arm. It's none-other than reclusive Taliban leader, Mullah Omar!"

"Listen, Double-A. You know Omar & I ...
