Three E’s of Education Hit Alberta

It used to be the ABC’s for Alberta students.

Now it’s the three E’s: Engaged, Ethical and Entrepreneurial.

This E Trilogy was released Wednesday in a report called ‘Inspiring Education, ‘the brain-child of the 22-member Steering Committee of Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans.

Education Minister Dave Hancock heralded the report from a podcast studio near Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue.

“The Steering Committee has listened to and built on the views of Albertans to establish a roadmap for the future of education in Alberta,” says Hancock. “This report challenges everyone involved in education to make the many bold but necessary changes that will prepare our students for their future.”

Meanwhile, a group of about 80 engaged adults were meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Mayfield Inn.

“Learning Our Way To The Next Alberta” was a gathering of teachers, nurses, union heads, government staff, and writers—and former Education Minister Dave King.

Gwynne Dyer, author of the book, Climate Wars, had come all the way from the U.K. Others on the Friday night panel were speakers Scott Murray, Donna Kennedy-Glans and Mark Anielski.

Topics at the symposium were: 1) Individuals, Relationships and Community, 2) Work and the Economy, 3) Governance and Politics, and 4) Emerging Technologies.

Stephen Murgatroyd said the group will be invited to sign a petition to encourage Hancock to “do the right thing.” It will be interesting to see what that is, or if it’s already contained in his 20-year plan.

“I really think we have something here that can work,” said Ken Chapman, of Cambridge Strategies, one of several organizations that sponsored the event along with the ATA.

The Inspired Education report echoes eerily other education-related events . There’s ‘engaged’ and then there’s ‘enraged.’

Communities are erupting over closures of a number of Alberta schools, and teacher and staff lay-offs due to recent budget cuts.
