Ripped from the St. Albert headlines

Sometimes it seems St. Albert is a busy little city with all the big city action.
So much so, sometimes I just can't decide what's worth writing about that other human beings here and far would take an interest. Well, how about a little of everything? Why don't I just skim the headlines from the two newspapers in my fair city to give you an overview of what's happening out here?
The October 16th edition of the Saint City News from the cover page reads; "Search On For Snowmobiler." Yes, a man took a snowmobile onto the thin ice of Sandy Lake a few kilometres northeast of St. Albert. Yes it's not winter yet, enough said.
Another page in and we read; "Brick School gone, not forgotten." There was recently a homecoming for people who taught and learned at the school, which was torn down in 1960. I didn't know the school existed or that a memorial of the building stands near St. Vital Avenue. All these years, hmm.
On October 17th a headline in the Gazette tells us; "Commission to hear teacher case." This of course refers to the Alberta Human Rights Commission which is going to hear a complaint filed by substitute teacher Jan Buterman against the St. Albert Catholic School Division. This after Buterman told the division she was transitioning to living full-time as a man. The school division soon dropped Buterman from the substitute list. Randy Kish, I enjoyed your letter to the editor on this topic and also wonder exactly when does "she" become a "he?" who decides at what point "she" is now a "he?" I'll leave it at that.
Another headline reads "City not contemplating public sector freeze like provincial government." Should we be surprised by this? I'm not. Then I read; "Slow uptake for park 'ride shuttle." Park and Ride transit has become very popular, but riders are parking beyond the areas they are allowed resulting in tickets and upset business owners. To alleviate this problem, there is now a park and ride service from the Akinsdale/Kinex arenas. Not many people are taking advantage of this. Probably because they have to take a shuttle bus to and from the Village Transit Station. So inconvenient you know. The service is being done on a trial basis and will end on December 4th. Let's give it some time and see what happens.
On another page we read; "Retired teacher wins school board seat." Always good to have a retired teacher on the board. Every school board needs to have one of these experienced educators.
"City unfazed by games competition," reads another headline making the reader think we should be worried about an unconfirmed report that both Edmonton and Calgary are going to be bidding to host the 2012 Special Olympic Canada Winter Games. Hey, Calgary hosted those games with Canmore in 1996. That should be enough to quickly knock them out of the running.
In terms of local news, St. Albert is no longer the sleepy bedroom community it once was. We've grown and sometimes taken on those big city problems like high taxes. More news on that subject soon as the St. Albert Taxpayers Association is preparing to be a thorn in the side of city council during the months ahead.
More on that subject next time.
