Thanks Canada!

Posted 3/1/2010 5:49:00 AM
The Olympics are over and what an great Olympics it was. We had everything. We had a tragedy, we had heartache, we had weather problems, we had technical problems, but one thing we didn't have was problem was with hosting an awesome winter games. With all the negatives, we also had triumph in the face of overwhelming adversity, courage, passion and oh so many gold medals!!

Canada showed the world that not only could you have a great time in this beautiful country, we were the champions of winter sport. We were the team to beat. With 14 medals, we break the record for the most golds won in a winter Olympics. Ever. That's pretty cool. I hope its not just because we were doing so well (and I don't for a moment assume its not) but I had a blast watching these Olympics. It became more than water cooler ...

Isn't Gold Good Enough?

I am so proud of our Olympic athletes. The slush has not settled yet, but to see Canada with 3 gold medals does my patriotic heart good. Doesn't bother me in the slightest that Germany and the US are ahead of us in medals. I could do with France being behind us in the medal count, but I won't lose too much sleep over it. Who will ever forget Frederic Bilodeau running up and hugging his brother after winning that gold medal?

What is really burning me up is not how our athletes are behaving but how the members of our media are behaving. In a time when our hearts should be swelling with pride at not only the honour of hosting the games but how fantastic our men and women are doing, there are still newspaper folks and radio hosts in OUR country trashing the games, our organizers and ...

Its Time for Some Gold

Canada needs gold. We don't have to have a more impressive opening ceremonies and we don't have to somehow master the weather like the Chinese did. Good thing too - we are not good at that stuff here.

What Canada needs - more than a great turnout, a fine showing of international sport, a safe and friendly games - is gold medals won at home. In Montreal and in Calgary we were silvered out - we just can't take that kind of shutout again.

Canadians are awesome athletes -we practically lease the podium at international hockey. Snowboarding, skeleton - Canada is the team to beat. Where else but in our Rockies can skiers train all year round? OK maybe the Swiss Alps, but you get my point - we know winter. I don't why we decided to demonstrate that by doing this in Vancouver, the least winter place we have, ...

Fast Food Breakfast Wars

McDonalds dropped the gloves when they started selling good coffee WITH (I might add) warning labels about it's temperatures. Then they gave it away all summer. Drive thru coffee giant Tim Horton's was floored - they actually lost so much business they raised their prices (soulless corporate pirates!)

Tim Horton's has pulled the jersey over McRaunchy's head with the new English Muffin breakfast sandwich. They don't have them available in back bacon yet - but when they do, it's only a matter of time before you can get a Big Tim burger and the arches come crashing down.

All kidding aside, Tim Horton's English muffin breakfast sandwiches are gooooood. I think they may have been dosed with whatever Timmies has been sneaking into their coffee all these years, because I was instantly compelled to eat 4 more of them. Oh wait, that's because I'm a fat pig. Still... way better ...

Does Apathy Breed the Fringe?

For whatever reason -people just don't care. Religion and politics - two of the most important topics of conversation have become taboo. Their is a growing trend for people to start avoiding the news and turtle into their own smaller world. And why shouldn't they? All politicians are crooked. More and more criminals walk the streets. Realistically, we should put 6 foot fences around our homes and never talk to our neighbours. Wait - we already do that. For the last several years, the majority of people have not participated in the political process, they have not gone to church (be it Christian, Muslim or Scientology). What's more, when we see people in the larger world fighting for what they believe in, we marginalize them as kooks. Here are a couple of cases in point:

1) Wiebo Ludwig - He has to be crazy, he lives in a commune and ...

God is In the Little Things

It is really difficult for me to listen to the story of little Isaiah May. He is the little three month old boy who's fate rests in the courts right now. The hospital wants to pull the plug. They say Isaiah is brain dead and there is no hope of recovery. His parents disagree - they say that they have seen improvements in their son's condition and that they are praying for a miracle for Isaiah - that it would be murder to remove life support. The courts are waiting until next week to get more information.

I think society has a responsibility to the parents in this situation. If the child is as the physicians say, in a vegetative state, he cannot feel pain or confusion or sadness over his condition. Unless the parents are in a place where they feel in their hearts that they can let him ...

Pants On the Ground

OK - I've been guilty of having some pretty grim blogs the last few weeks. Dead kids, politics, ETS beatings (and the lack of appropriate beatings on said buses) so here is a bit of a turn.

Every so often, I find something so funny that I can't stop laughing. With tears in my eyes, I hit rewind a few times. This morning I hit Youtube and was very pleased to note that not only had the world been laughing along with me, they had been adding to it. A remix, a couple of redos and oh yes, you have arrived when a girl in a monkey hat covers your song into country - Give it up for General Larry Platt - 'Pants on the Ground'

ThePhoenix.com: Gen. Larry Platt's "Pants on the Ground" spawns instant remixes, Facebook group, YouTube covers

and my favourite - the girl in the monkey ...

All Terrain Morons

There are a lot of things I can say to someone who puts their child in a dangerous situation. Their are books of curses and litanies of scorn I can place upon the heads of those who don't helmet the precious heads of their little ones.

We can make helmet laws, we can fine and punish those who disobey but I can't even think of a circumstance worse than losing your child to your own mental incompetence.

That said, why are snowmobiles and ATV operators not learning? Two kids are dead this week. No respect for physics? How about history? Kids and ATVs don't mix.

My deepest condolences to the Maron family. They had to learn a lesson the hardest way possible. To all other ATV enthusiasts, if you're going to continue riding with your kids, then maybe you should spend an afternoon with Taeya's parents first.

And the NDP ...
