Ladies’ Choice Week
Posted 1/25/2010 8:56:00 PM
This week’s blogs will be a bit of a departure from the normal rigors of fashion fun. Fashion, as you may know, is a female-dominated pastime, and being female myself, I care about the non-sartorial position of women in Edmonton, Canada, and beyond. So in the name of sporadic substance, I’ve attended two events in the past two weeks that deal with women’s career choices. The first event I went to has a little bit to do with being a girl and a whole lot with being a giant nerd. That’s right, I’m talking about women in science-y type fields.
I attended the opening of the WINSETT Centre at the U of A, which is run by Women In Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology, and I was impressed by the passion and commitment that the people there had for encouraging us girlies to expand our horizons and identify with ourselves ...
Holt Me Closer

Alright Edmonton fashion-friends, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that after a weekend down south, I have concluded that we remain the better-dressed metropolis in Alberta and that our shopping overall affords us more options than our Flamesy brethren to the south. The bad news? The Holt Renfrew expansion in Calgary is fantastic and absolutely worth a visit if you’re heading down the QE2.
The Holt kind of catches you off guard as a really, really expensive diamond in the rough amid all of the current construction inside Calgary’s newly christened “Core” shopping centre. I let the animal instinct that provokes me to follow all things shiny and bright guide me toward the brilliant new store, and the first thing that surprised me was how big it is. In fact, this Holt is only a few square feet shy of being the same size as ...
Stumbling into January, Sandals in the Snow, and City Centre

Welcome back, 2010 babies! I hope New Year’s Eve was pleasant enough to everyone. New Year’s is an occasion to shock and awe if your tastes tend to lean toward the dramatic. Silvers, golds, shiny crap, fake eyelashes: it’s all totally doable. Sequins became more popular in the latter half of 2009, which made them even easier to find for New Year’s outfits—one of the few times of year that it seems seasonally appropriate to do so. But there are other things to consider when planning New Year’s Eve apparel, and I guess the following advice applies to any night out on the town.
You know how whenever you’re a pedestrian, you curse drivers for being jerks, and whenever you’re driving, you begrudge pedestrians for being so slow? I find a parallel between being the girl wearing a ridiculously skin-baring outfit sans parka in -25 weather outside a bar and ...
The perfect winter coat
Posted 12/31/2009 4:16:00 AM
Alright, everyone, I’m going to level with you. I’m terrible at mornings. You know that vague feeling of dread you sometimes get for no reason? That’s evil energy in the air travelling through your heart as a direct result of me being awake before nine-thirty.
Anyway, the point of all of this is, no matter how full of hate I am as I get ready to go to work (which I don’t hate, incidentally), I always feel a lovely, furry comfort when I throw on my new winter jacket. This comfort comes from knowing I will be warm no matter how cold it is, and from knowing that my six-months-a-year outerwear outfit represents at least a little bit how I’m dressed underneath.

So I picked this little gem up at Holt Renfrew in Toronto this past November, and it has yet to disappoint me. It wasn’t outrageously expensive (for Holt ...
Boxing Match
Posted 12/21/2009 12:38:00 PM
Greetings to you on this lovely solstice day! It’s been such a long time since I last posted, and I must say that if your Christmas season has been anything like mine, you are wondering how this frosty city made it all the way to the end of the month already. The hiatus is over, however, since I would be remiss to skip over this most important of shopping seasons. There is one particular winter importance this week: Boxing Day.
Any clotheshorse will have braved the elements, both human and natural, to participate in the descent of all things decent that is Boxing Day shopping. This year, in the name of sanity and pyjamas, I will admit that I am forgoing the malls this year. I do find that many of the deals get even better as Boxing Week progresses, and these days the Big Mall doesn’t offer nearly the ...
Robert Lobetta: A Fashionista’s Foray Into the World of Hair
Posted 11/10/2009 3:21:00 PM
When I told my hairdresser friend that I got to see Robert Lobetta at the Eveline Charles Academy last night, she overfoamed with enthusiasm, exclaiming that he’s an inspiration.
Speaking as someone pretty far removed from the industry, I can tell you that her effervescence was present in droves last night from over 100 stylists and students all pleased as punch to be at Lobetta’s speaking engagement.
As the artistic director for the Sebastian line of hair products, Lobetta has a rockstar background, with one of his earliest gigs in his teens in a salon in London that cut everyone’s hair—even the Rolling Stones. He’s done editorial hair work for Italian Vogue, and even work on Ridley Scott movies. So the man knows what works. And the photos he showed of the hair he’s done were pretty outstanding. Lobetta said that he was passionate about treating hair like “it’s a ...
