Cheap Spill Thrills: Vogue Italy Gets Dirty in the Bayou
Posted 8/8/2010 11:00:00 AM
I've spent many hours reading and seething about the Gulf oil spill, but I never thought any of my musings would be relevant to include in my fashion blog--turns out, thanks to Vogue photographer Steven Meisel, I was wrong. Vogue Italy has done a photo shoot in the Gulf. . .in the oil. With, like, a model writhing around and giving the same vague lifeless glares typical of runway fashion--only now, covered in oil, her pain seems warranted. You can check out the shoot here.
Now, I get that Meisel is trying to make a statement, probably, about consumerism and industry and corporate greed and the environment and whatever. . .and I will say the pictures are evocative and more interesting than, say, some equestrian-inspired shoot taken on some rich guy's country estate. And awareness about the spill itself is never a bad thing (and if you think the spill ...
Toronto Fashion Hunt: Newcomer Summer Part I
Posted 7/19/2010 4:00:00 AM
Alright, so the last trip I had to Toronto lasted about five days and I saw the basics: Bloor, Eaton Centre, Queen Street. Having seen a bit more of the city now as a fledgling resident, I can offer slightly sager advice about what to go depending on what you’re looking for. So without further ado, and with pictures in tow, I present the low-down on Toronto downtown shopping. I’ve also included my favourite imbibery with each accompanying district.
Upscale Designer: Bloor all the way. The big boutique designers are there, and with shoe stores like Davids and overwhelmingly large Bays and Holts, if you have money to spend, it will go pretty fast here ?. If you keep walking down Bloor you will get into Yorkville, where there are some smaller, more personal stores but which still have high quality, designer stuff inside.
After-shopping drinks/coffee: Hemingways. They have a ...
L00k Before You Pwn: An Internet Fashion-inspiration Guide

The fashion-conscious among us have all been there: Anna Wintour slaps an awesome photo on to 300 pages of ads for crappy, expensive jeans and we try and sift through the small amount of content that rests between the covers of Vogue--and it’s definitely the best magazine for fashion out there. And to be sure, Vogue and its brethren are still useful resources if you’re interested in runway trends and celebrity “it” bags and things like that. If your fashion tastes run contrary to the trends, or if you’re not in the mood to get a crazy stingy paper cut on a perfume sample, going online for fashion inspiration is an obvious choice. From street fashion to personal vanity shots, the interwebz is the best place to go for ideas for your next shopping adventure.
I’m not even going to touch online stores here since there are too many to ...
Sylvia Soo & the Pink Tie Gala

Chemo in stilettos? Now I’m all for looking your best, but it’s reasonable to cut the gravely ill some slack—but for Sylvia Soo, part of the healing process during breast cancer was runway-ing the hospital in heels and feeling, as she puts it “cancer fabulous.” Sylvia is 26 and, although she has just recently recovered from breast cancer and a subsequent mastectomy, was full of the vigor and confidence typical of your mid-20s when I met up with her yesterday to talk about her fund raising and awareness event, the Pink Tie Gala (this Saturday night at Lexus Edmonton).
Sylvia has blogged on Facebook about the whole chronology of her treatment and spares few details about the realities of cancer. For 20something girls, breast cancer seems decades away. As a regional coordinator for Rethink Pink, Sylvia now works to raise awareness to girls my age—to really drive home the fact ...
The Western Canada Fashion Week: Runways, Local Celebrities, and More

Sandra Sing Fernandes is something of a fashion icon in Edmonton. The owner of Planet Ze just off Whyte and organizer of fashion magazines and events in Edmonton, Fernandes believes in Edmontonian fashion enough to put an unreal amount of time and effort into all her fashion-related endeavors. Western Canada Fashion Week was no exception.
The TransAlta Arts Barns has been the mainstay for Edmonton fashions shows, and the stages within are transformed into runway venues quite nicely. The lines I saw that night were great. Standouts were Broken Ghost Couture—a Calgary designer—and BebaBean, a Vancouver designer of baby wear. Broken Ghost is making some really interesting, feminine designs and I think are worth checking out. Local designer Jessica Halabi is doing some classy designs as well.

My only concern with the shows was the use of time in between designers. For example, on several occasions, members of the audience ...
