Edmonton lab gets first ever Japanese Microscope

Big news on something really small in Edmonton.
The National Institute for Nanotechnology -- on the U of A campus -- is getting the first electron microscopes being built by Hitachi that have ever been outside of Japan.
One application for the technology that was demonstrated to Labour Minister Rona Ambrose is how working at the nano level can help extract bitumen from the oil sands. "Our oil patch is our number one economic driver and we have to continue to support those people that work in our oil sector, and this is a way to do their jobs faster cleaner and cheaper."
Advanced Education and Technology minister Doug Horner says he's been told about tests to break down the resource underground before bringing it to the surface
"They can do that kind of testing here in the laboratory and then take it out in the field with a higher degree of probability of success."
Both the federal and provincial governments are ponying up millions to help with the research.
