Officials hope that public service announcements beginning this week will raise awareness about safety for emergency responders.
Created by the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund, the 30 second segments will air on Shaw Cable System channels for the next year as part of the ``Put Yourself in Our Boots'' campaign.
Fund chairwoman Maryanne Pope says the idea is to get people to think about workplace safety from the perspective of firefighters, ambulance workers or police officers who may have to enter a workplace during an emergency. Featuring actual Calgary police officers, fire fighters and paramedics, the ads show how dangerous it can be for them going into unfamiliar, and often dark, surroundings.
Pope's husband, John Petropoulos -- a Calgary police officer -- was killed in 2000 after falling through a false ceiling while investigating a potential break-in at a warehouse. In the wake of that, members of his CPS graduating class began selling memorial pins with his regimental number, with the proceeds going to creating the fund. (aw, cp, ccg)
