The risks are small -- but potentially deadly.
Over 650,000 kids visit North American emergency rooms with head injuries each year.
The University of Alberta's Terry Klassen says CT scans can save some lives, but can put others at risk. "There is a seven in 10,000 chance they could eventually get a cancer they could die from so it's not high but it was there in the background," says Klassen, who has just completed the first part of a study which lays out seven criteria doctors should follow before calling for a CT scan on a child.
It's not ready to be made into policy yet. Klassen says another year of study is needed.(rh/bp)
