6am

A troublemaker flying on a mix of drugs and booze jumped into the lap of an ETS bus driver and tried to gain control of a moving bus near West Edmonton Mal last evening (Monday)l.

The chain of events borders on bizarre. Police received reports of a possible robbery and a disturbance on a transit bus near 169th Street and 87th Avenue just before 6:30pm.

Two men and a woman demanded money from as many as four passengers. One of the men, in his early twenties, jumped onto the lap of the ETS driver as the bus approached the West Edmonton Mall terminal at about twenty kilometres an hour. The man grabbed at the driver's arms and struggled for control of the steering wheel before the driver stopped the bus. He ordered the man to get off and received death threats before the man and his buddies fled into the mall.

Police rounded up several suspects but bus passengers didn't stick around. A man has been charged with mischief for interfering with the operation of the bus and with uttering threats against the driver. (EM,blb)
