The Mustard Seed Edmonton says, within the next year, it will build another 30, one-bedroom apartments for the homeless.

Reverend Sam Breaky says a provincial grant will supply up to 70 per cent of the capital cost for the 530-square foot units.

Breaky adds that the model is dependent upon staff and volunteer support.

"Our desire with the 'Housing First' model is not just to provide four walls and a roof for people, but to provide the support," remarks Breaky. "The peer support groups and the counselling and the employment training, and things like that will enable them to receive the full benefit of what the house was intended for."

The Mustard Seed plans to have a 20 unit facility and a 10 unit facility in different areas of the city to keep the foot print small. And, Reverend Breaky says they would like to renovate buildings that are more then an ''eye-sore'' in a community.

There were 3079 homeless people in Edmonton during the last head count in 2008, an 18 percent increase over 2006. (td, ccg)
