Lawyers are to present closing arguments today in the murder trial of a man accused of gunning down two Saskatchewan Mounties.
Curt Dagenais, 44, testified on his own behalf last week as the only defence witness in the case.
Dagenais claims the RCMP officers shot at him first following a chase down country roads near the town of Spiritwood in July 2006. He says he fired back in self-defence and never intended to kill the officers.
Constables Robin Cameron and Marc Bourdages were both shot in the head and died later in hospital. The jury is expected to begin deliberations Tuesday. (The Canadian Press, ccg)
B.C. Taser Inquiry: Poland Reax.
The inquiry into Robert Dziekanski's death is making headlines in Poland.
Newspapers and T-V stations in Dziekanski's home country have been following the story since Dziekanski was stunned by an RCMP Taser and died at Vancouver's airport in 2007. And the recent testimony by the RCMP officers who were involved has rekindled that interest.
Piotr Koscinski, a Polish newspaper reporter, says there's a lot of coverage about the testimony in Poland. He says people in the country find it hard to believe that four armed police officers were scared of a man holding a stapler.
Koscinski also says his readers are confused that the officers haven't been punished.
Marcin Wrona, a Polish TV reporter who was in Vancouver for the inquiry last week, says his viewers are astonished by what they're hearing at the inquiry. He says they were especially concerned to hear that the Taser was used five times. (The Canadian Press, ccg)
