Statistics Canada says the economy lost another 82,600 jobs in February as the unemployment rate jumped to 7.7 per cent from January's 7.2 per cent.
This was the second outsized job contraction in a row following January's massive 129,000 labour market retreat. Since the peak last October, Canada has shed 295,000 jobs.
The February numbers might have been worse but not for a pick-up in part-time workers, as full-time employment fell by 111,000.
The agency says the biggest declines occurred in Ontario, among young workers and in the construction trade. (The Canadian Press, ccg)
