A new index is being created to measure the well-being of Canadians that goes beyond economic indicators like the GDP.

The Canadian Index of Wellbeing will measure eight areas, including health, education, state of the arts, standard of living, participation in the democratic process, quality of environment, the way Canadians use their time and the vitality of communities.

Former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow is the chair of the non-partisan and independent institute that will produce the index. He says the GDP, or gross domestic product, only looks at goods and services produced, and this new index will look at quality of life.

Romanow says the composite figure will be able to tell Canadians where improvements need to be made or where changes in policies should be implemented.

The institute's first report looks at standard of living, health and community vitality, and information on all eight domains will be made public by next year. The index, once it's completed in 2010, will measure and track well-being trends regularly. (The Canadian Press, ccg)
