Laptops stolen from U. of A. Hospital lab
10am
Ed Mason
6/24/2009
Alberta Health says two laptop computers containing patient information have been stolen from a lab at the University of Alberta Hospital.
The computers went missing during a break-in at the Provincial Lab Information Technology room back on June 4th but the information wasn't revealed until today.
It has been confirmed that lab reports for communicable and reportable diseases were saved to the hard drives of both laptops. Some of these lab reports may have contained personal identifiable information such as patient names and health care numbers.
Alberta Health says accessing the information will require the use of multiple passwords so it believes the information can not be easily compromised and there is no evidence anyone has tried to do that. Nevertheless, people are being urged to be vigilante for any evidence of identity theft.
Alberta Health says it takes security seriously and it is working with the Edmonton Police Service and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Members of the public can direct questions or concerns related to this incident to 1-877-354-8811.
