If you have been with out power for the last 12 hours you may be wondering about the food in your fridge, and if it's gone south.
Kevin is a Refrigeration Mechanic who mostly deals with commercial fridges, but in terms of a household fridge he says the less you open the doors the better. "You need an apple, maybe wait until you need something else as well. Don't open the fridge. Typically, and I do the same thing as well, I open the fridge door and I look around. You keep the door open, but get out of that habit. Know what you're going in there for, and keep it closed as much as you can."
He says any grocery stores who have had a power outage will have to throw out their stock after a couple hours.
If food has is left in the "Danger Zone" (between 4ºC and 40ºC) for longer than two hours, it should be discarded.
