It appears about twenty-two laundry workers at Alberta Hospital are at the top of its downsizing list.

The president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says the workers are apparently being offered jobs at other facilities in the care-taking end of things.

Doug Knight says the province's plan to close some of the mental health facility's acute care beds is also worrisome. "You can't just put these people out into some basement suite in the community and say have at her," says Knight. "We know that’s not helping them, you can't watch their medication for instance. We've got enough stable minded people that get half way through their medication and go oh, we don't need this; feel a lot better now."

Knight says it’s unclear just how many more workers will be affected by the downsizing of Alberta Hospital. The move reportedly follows a decision by Alberta Health Services not to redevelop the hospital.

The province says it will move some of the affected patients to community and urban hospitals which Knight says will just take up already active care beds. (td, ccg)
