The City of Edmonton is known far and wide for its volunteer work and today the Capital City Clean Up's Graffiti Management Program, in partnership with 630 CHED and its listeners, is honouring those volunteers.
The fourth mural in the "Giants of Edmonton" series is called "Celebrating Volunteers" and sits on the side of a coffee shop along 118th avenue at 48th street in the community of Beverly.
Jess Hogan and Nina Partridge are the artists involved in this latest installment.
"It's been a lot of fun and there's been so much positive, encouraging [words from] people walking by and just really giving us the drive and direction we needed to make it amazing," Partridge says. "It's just such a great opportunity; it's a once in a lifetime thing, in a way."
The program is designed to promote public art in the city as a deterrent to graffiti vandalism. "It's something I guess you would call a vector style illustration," Hogan says. "We wanted to keep it vibrant and bright and simple and just really shout out to all the volunteers that - we know what you do out there and we thank you for it."
The first two Giants of Edmonton murals were of Joey Moss and Lois Hole in 2008. "Devotion" is the third work commissioned by the city. (jk)
