Public buildings need tougher security

A consultant says the Workers Compensation Board headquarters in downtown Edmonton isn't the only provincial building ripe for a dangerous incident.

Nine people were taken hostage at the WCB offices on Wednesday but the incident ended peacefully when a gunman gave himself up after 10 hours.

Oliver Salvador, managing director of CQB Group Inc., says such an event could easily be repeated in any number of public facilities, including the legislature.

He says Alberta must get serious about its security because right now the prevailing attitude is that it will never happen.

He says it will take a major loss of life or property to change that.
