Hard to believe it but Christmas is less than two months away. As you head into this shopping season local businesses are asking you to keep your here at home.
November is the second annual Shop Local First month - aimed at getting you to shift your spending this holiday season. Jessie Radies, founder of Keep Edmonton Original, says buying locally has economic benefits for the community and a reduced environmental impact.
"We have shorter supply lines," she says. "For the most part we're smaller businesses and we can be located in walkable communities. We're not spread out at the edge of the city."
Radies it's as easy as stopping at the Italian Centre, Whole Earth or a local bakery, cheese shop or coffee roaster rather than just automatically heading to the supermarket. And she says even a 10% shift of your spending to local businesses can make a big difference.
