A battle is brewing over plans to run the west LRT along Stony Plain road.

Nearly 70 people have registered to have their say on the proposal during two days of public hearings. The fight is shaping along the business district in west Edmonton.

Greg Downie owns ''All Make Vacuums'' on 153rd street and is one business that will close up shop if this line goes through. He's helped collect 1300 signatures in the last three weeks, hoping to convince council to move the tracks to 100th Avenue.

Downie says running the LRT down Stony Plain road would leave no place to park, "Remove the traffic, the busineses don't survive, it's that simple"

However, Irene Blaine says they need the revitalization of LRT on Stony Plain, since 100th Avenue already has a build up of apartments. She says what's there now just doesn't cut it, "Three porn shops with in a five block radius, two massage parlours. I know there's other businesses too, but we've had a lot of crime that's generated from that area."

Council will hear more submissions on west and south LRT expansion on Friday. (sj, ccg)
