Stelmach defends bed closures at Alberta Hospital
3:13am
Amy Arts
11/18/2009
Premiere Ed Stelmach's was a special guest in the 630 CHED studio Tuesday night. His visit comes at a time when the government is taking heat over a number of issues.
The province's soaring deficit, H1N1 vaccination program, and Bill 50 top the list... Along with bed closures at Alberta Hospital.
The province announced this summer that it plans to close more than 246 of the 418 beds at the facility over the next three years.
The Premier assures that no one will be moved from the hospital until all support is in place. He says there are a number of organizations in the community that will provide housing.
"They may provide housing for the mentally ill", Stelmach says. "They might provide housing for those that have come through some difficult times in their life whether it be addiction to alcohol or drugs for an extended period of time."
The Stelmach government expects that it will save more than $50 million by 2012.
