There is talk that NAIT might hike tuition fees by up to 40% That would add hundreds of dollars to the average yearly bill of $5400.
NAIT is facing a multi million dollar deficit and will ask the province for permission to lift the limit on tuition increases. If approved, tuition at NAIT would move to the same level as fees charged at SAIT.
Geoff Tate, President of the student association at NAIT called it frightening
“It’s a scary situation for sure, no one is suggesting that SAIT should drop their levels down to NAIT’s levels, so the next step is for NAIT to bump their levels up.”
“It’s just a really scary situation right now, with no regard for this tuition cap.”
Tate added the students may be on the verge of losing a long fight for a tuition cap.
Over at the U of A, there's also talk of a fee increase for professional programs but nothing is being released until the government sees the number. (ls)
