Health premiums making a comeback?
4:30pm
Edmonton / iNews880.com
11/19/2009
It sounds like the door is being left open a crack, for a return to Albertans sharing in the costs of health care.
They were a topic of discussion Thursday morning, when Health Minister Ron Liepert met with rural politicians at the annual convention of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Countie in Edmonton.
Health premiums that Albertans used to have to pay were eliminated at the start of this year, which Liepert says was the right thing to do. But, at the same time, the minister wonders if something should replace them, noting how the province was in a much better financial position when the decision to eliminate those fees was made.
Liepert insists nothing is on the table. But, he has got some letters from people who say they don't mind paying something, to keep health care working.
Premier Ed Stelmach is downplaying the idea of a new revenue stream for health care, suggesting that many people who support the return of health premiums weren't actually paying them
