Some angry Alberta homeowners want the Stelmach government to bring in legislation to protect them against what they call shoddy construction.

Seven people who own homes in Stony Plain, brought their concerns to the Alberta legislature on Monday.

They say they have leaky roofs, flooding basements, improper insulation and uneven stairways and allege the builder hasn't fixed it properly and say they've shelled tens of thousands of dollars for repairs.

In question period, Municipal Affairs Ray Danyluk said the province is consulting with stakeholders to improve residential construct practices and to make the inspection process more stringent. However, he would not commit to meet with the homeowners. (CP, aa, ccg)

House collapses, has to be demolished due to safety concerns

A home in Calgary will have to be demolished after it collapsed.

The house started to fall over Monday afternoon and fire officials say the foundation at the back gave way.

Four people were working inside the home at the time. Neighbours on each side of the home were evacuated and have found alternate accommodations until the area is deemed safe.

Fire crews shut off the gas to all three homes. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapsing foundation. (The Canadian Press, ccg)
