Not that there's any competition on the domestic front, but Monday afternoon is when Edmonton puts its bid into Heritage Canada for the rights to try to get Expo 2017.
Bid committee chair Tony Franceschini and University of Alberta president Indira Samarasekera will be on hand for the unveiling. A big part of the plan includes a host of new buildings for South Campus. These will serve as Expo pavilions for 2017, only to be converted to university buildings after the event.
However Mayor Stephen Mandel says there's more to it than that. "Infrastructure investment in the city will be substantially higher," says Mandel. "But, it's also about having a vision for the city, and being to able to define, in a more effective and creative way, what Alberta is and what Edmonton is, and where we want to go as a city and a province. I think that's really important"
Mandel says it will allow Alberta to show the world our energy prowess during Canada's 150th birthday. (sj, bp, ccg)
