Former Olympian Doreen Ryan will be Edmonton's final torchbearer when the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay comes to the Alberta capital, January 13th.
Ryan will carry the Olympic torch on its final 300 metres of Edmonton’s relay and light the flame of the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron in Sir Winston Churchill Square.
The Edmonton native participated in many sports. Her national and international showing in speed skating – including participation in the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games – lead to her becoming the first woman inducted into the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame. She continued her contributions to sport by managing the Canadian Track and Field Team and supporting the Commonwealth Games of Canada.
“Doreen Ryan’s background of athletic success and exceptional contribution to the sporting community reflects the Olympic spirit of excellence and commitment,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “I encourage everyone in our community to join Doreen and the other torchbearers on January 13th to show the world how inspired we all are by the symbol of the Olympic Flame and its message of peace and friendship.”
Edmontonians are being asked to demonstrate their support by lining the relay route, participating in the celebrations, and wearing red or decorating homes and offices in red as part of the Canadian Olympic Committee’s "Paint the Town Red" campaign. The campaign is already under way with special banners put up around Edmonton. As well, the city hall pyramid shining red at night
