Police seized 19 kilograms of Ketamine, also known as "special K," from a home in the city's northwest, as part of a two-month-long investigation.
That's equal to 380,000 hits of the drug, making this the largest seizure of Ketamine in Alberta to date. Police say is popular with kids as young as 12. Ketamine is a general anesthetic that also produces dissociative and hallucinogenic side effects.
Police also seized $8,000 in cash, and what's believed to be a small amount of ecstasy.
In a garage attached to the home, investigators also found items consistent with methamphetamine production. They then obtained a search warrant which allowed clandestine laboratory investigators from the RCMP Edmonton Drug Section, the EPS Drug Section, and the Edmonton Fire Department remove the materials found within the garage.
In the garage they seized red phosphorous, hydrochloric acid, trimethyl chlorosynine, chloroform, phenyl thaline, sodium hydroxide, and chemical glassware. Police allege that the items seized and the manner in which they were found was consistent with materials used to produce methamphetamine. The lab was not found to be in operation at the time.
An Edmonton man is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of the proceeds of crime.
Tu Thanh Nguyen, 27, will be in court tomorrow. (jg,blb)
