University of Alberta researchers are teaming up with scientists halfway around the world to look into new ways of producing clean energy.
The U of A is getting $25 million in government money for the project. Researchers will be working together with a German research group to clean up the oil sands.
"There are six components to this research," says Premier Ed Stelmach, who made the announcement. "Some on tailings ponds, some on using geothermal energy instead of natural gas for in situ development of our oil sands."
The research will also focus on more efficient methods of reclamation and developing renewable energy sources.
"Technology is going to help us deal with challenges we have around the environment," adds Stelmach. "And it's not only carbon, but it's air quality, water and soil quality."
The project is a five-year partnership. The money comes from Ottawa, but Alberta gets to decide how to spend it. (bd,blb)
