Wildrose Alliance Leader Danielle Smith says the impact of global warming is being overblown and Alberta and Canada shouldn't be bound by any global warming treaty.

Smith told a Canadian Club luncheon in Calgary Monday that there are too many uncertainties with both climate change science and the expensive solutions to global warming. She made her comments as world leaders gathered in Copenhagen to forge a successor pact to the Kyoto Protocol.

Smith says a lack of scientific consensus over the cause of global warming means Alberta shouldn't be hamstrung by carbon storage and cap and trade programs. She also said Canada shouldn't tie itself to whatever path the U.S. takes at Copenhagen.

But the leader of the upstart right-wing party said Alberta should restrict the use of coal _ used primarily for electrical generation _ rather than target the oilsands. (Calgary Sun, ccg)
