A city police dog is recovering after being stabbed twice in the head.
It all started around 8:00 Monday night when police spotted a stolen vehicle on St. Albert Trail near Yellowhead Trail. Police tried to stop the vehicle, but it reportedly sped off. EPS sped after the vehicle, but soon called off the pursuit due to high speeds, and public safety.
The stolen vehicle continued to speed through city streets, according to EPS. Eventually coming to a stop when the driver lost control and collided with a power pole near 118 Avenue.
EPS took the passenger into custody, but say the driver tried to run off. Cst. Darren Smith and Police Service Dog Cora had responded to the collision, and chased after the driver. While arresting him, police say he took out what they describe as a screwdriver-type hand tool and struck Cora with it multiple times.
Cora, when she visited the iNews880 studios in October with her EPS partner Darren Smith.
Cora was taken to an emergency vet clinic for surgery where she received treatment for two stab wounds to her head. The wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.
The 22-year-old passenger was arrested on three outstanding warrants.
The driver, Thomas Charles Bull, 27, has been charged with dangerous driving, criminal flight, possession of stolen property under $5000, possession of a dangerous weapon, driving while disqualified, and willfully causing suffering or injury to an animal. (aa,blb)
