Calgary police are calling their first known seizure of a drug made from crushed opium poppies a wake-up call.
Drug Unit Staff Sgt. Darren Cave says two people have been arrested and will be charged with trafficking and processing the drug, which is called doda. Cave says tips from the public led officers to an Indian grocery story in the city's northeast.
They seized a significant amount of the drug, as well as related paraphernalia such as scales.
Det. Doug Hudacin says the seizure shows the drug is emerging and is likely to spread.
Staff Sgt. Cave says officers were trained to recognize the drug after a massive seizure made in the city by Canada Border Services Agency agents in September. (cp, twd, ccg)
